Program Description

This is a six week internship for Ayurveda practitioners who have successfully completed a minimum of a two year Ayurveda Medicine program at a certified institution. (Other qualified healthcare practitioners who wish to volunteer their services must make individual inquiries.)

During the first 4 weeks of your Devi Ma Internship Program, you will be housed in the village of Sipadole in Bhaktapur, close to the Devi Ma Rural Ayurveda Hospital. Sipadole is a rural village of approximately 8,000 people.

You will be expected to work 6 days a week / 4 hours per day, with 1 day free per week. Two days of each week will be spent with Dr. Shrestha, and the other 4 days per week you will be supervised by Devi Ma staff doctors. This gives you a total of 96 hours of supervision with 32 of those hours directly with Dr. Shrestha in the first month.

At the end of the first 3 weeks, you will meet personally with Dr. Shrestha to assess your progress in the program.

During weeks 5 and 6, you will continue to work 6 days per week / 4 hours per day. However, eight (8) of these days will be with Dr. Shrestha at her clinics in Lalitpur (near Kathmandu) or in Bhaktapur City.

In addition to the above, you will spend 4 days accompanying Dr. Shrestha and other doctors on rural health camps. One or more of these may take place outside of the Kathmandu Valley. Your work schedule will vary according to the need of the camps. Should you be required to stay overnight, your accommodation and meal costs will be arranged by and paid for by Devi Ma.

You will spend a total of 20 days (4 hrs per day = 80 hrs) working directly with Dr. Shrestha. During this time, you will have ample opportunity for question and discussion periods, both with she and the other staff doctors.

The final 2 weeks will complete a total of 144 hours of clinical internship during the 6 week program. A Certificate of Completion will be presented only if you satisfactorily complete all assignments and required hours.

Interns are required to arrive in the Kathmandu/Patan area no later than one day prior to the start day, be able to commit to the full 6 week period, and to the following:

You will be expected to learn at an intermediate to advanced level:
- integration of clinical theory and clinical practice
- method of examination (Roga and Rogi Parikshya)
- 21 Ayurvedic herbs in detail
- specific treatment modalities as they arise in the clinical setting
- women’s health conditions

Practicum
- history taking (detail Ayurvedic prospect)
- assisting physicians in clinic
- collecting herbs for herbarium
- making medicines and formulas in the pharmacy
- community visit/service/pregnancy surveys
- observation of Pancha Karma treatments
- preparation for 5 case studies and one case presentation
- attending childbirth (only IF cases are available)
- 3,000 - 5,000 word dissertation (20-30 pages) on an approved topic
*3 copies due with corrections made – before you leave Nepal.
*REQUIRED for Certificate of Completion of Internship.

Curriculum
Week 1: Focus on clinical theory and discussion of integrative diagnosis and treatment, detailed study of herbs and medicine making, theory of women’s health.

Week 2: You will begin clinical practicum by assisting in the clinic under supervision, continuation of theory, including women’s health, plus working in the pharmacy and one herb walk.

Weeks 3, 4, & 5: Clinical practice with supervision, including personal check-in with Dr. Shrestha, practicum in pharmacy and medicine making, second herb walk, preparation for case studies and one case presentation.

Weeks 5 & 6: Focus on minimum 3,000 word dissertation with review and corrections, and minimum one full case presentation.

If you meet your responsibilities and commitments adequately, including the completion of and corrections made to your dissertation before you leave, and attendance is good, you will receive a Certificate of Completion of 200 hours of Internship (6 week). You will have on-going opportunities to assess your progress and discuss your dissertation with Dr. Shrestha during the internship.

FEES include full tuition and accommodation in Sipadole
$2250.00 in total, US Dollars (6 week program)

$350. (US) Registration Fee due with application payable to:
The Growing Edge, 445 Summit Road, Watsonville, CA 95076

$1,000. US due and payable to The Growing Edge by September 15th.

$900. due in US funds (Travellers checks preferable) in Nepal; on the first day of the program.

Included in the above fee is full tuition, accommodation in Sipadole (1 room for 6 weeks), plus use of the kitchen in the same house, and utilities (gas and electric) – per person. The cost of your food will be your own additional expense. You can expect to pay approximately $8 - $12 per day which will include hiring a cook. It is important to know that the cost of food in Kathmandu will be about 2X as much as in the village.

Transportation between work places (for the purpose of work) will be covered by Devi Ma.

To confirm a place in this program, the registration fee of $350. is due and payable to The Growing Edge (“Internship” in the memo) at the time of registration.
No deposit will be charged until you have received confirmation into the program.

Cancellation
If you have been accepted into the program and need to cancel more than 80 days prior to the start of the program, you will receive a refund of $250. For cancellations between 50 and 30 days from the start date, having paid a total of $1,350. you will receive a refund of $850.00. NO refund for any cancellation less than 30 days prior to the start of the program.

No place will be guaranteed in the program if program fees are late.

All transportation costs (except those between Lalitpur and Sipadole at the start and end of the program, and transportation needed for work) and any additional expenses not mentioned above are your responsibility.
